Minutes of the first meeting of the EAA TC PPA at the Forum Acusticum in Sevilla in 2002

Georg Klump, Oldenburg University, Germany1

Armin Kohlrausch, Philips Research Laboratories and Technical University Eindhoven,
The Netherlands2

During the EAA convention at Sevilla in September 2002 the first meeting of the EAA Technical Committee "Physiological and Psychological Acoustics" was held. The meeting was attended by researchers from 5 European countries and, in part, by the Executive Director of the Acoustical Society of America. For the present, the participants unanimously elected Armin Kohlrausch and Georg Klump as the provisional speakers.

Armin Kohlrausch presented a summary of the goals of the technical committee that had been posted before the meeting on the EAA website. Two main topics were discussed among the participants:

(1) Creation of a web-presentation of the TC on the EAA website providing links to research labs in the field, offers for jobs and possibilities for research fellowships for students and postdocs, and general information on funding opportunities. The DEGA web-administrator offers his support for establishing the website and Jesko Verhey volunteered to coordinate efforts to collect information.

(2) A meeting of researchers in the field of physiology and psychophysics should be arranged in 2004 (and then in a biannual rhythm). This meeting should be held in the form of an EAA-Symposium, i.e. be organized under the aegis of the EAA. To simplify the organization of the meeting, it is planned to hold the symposium in conjunction with another meeting in the field of physiological and psychological acoustics. The following options were discussed:

The joint congress of DEGA and SFA at Strasbourg 22-25 March 2004

The annual meeting of the DGA (German Audiology Society) also held in March 2004 in Leipzig

The annual British Society of Audiology research meeting held in September.

It was pointed out in the discussion that the cost for participants of the meeting must be low to offer the graduate students a possibility to attend. The speakers of the TC will first contact the organizers of the congress at Strasbourg to find out whether an agreement can be reached to offer low-cost registration to graduate students (about 50 Euro, members of EAA and non-members alike). If this is not possible, the DGA could provide for an alternative.
